The Return Plan

The break is rarely the problem. Getting back is. This one-pager helps you return in a few minutes.

Before you leave (30 seconds)

  • Write one line: "Next I will ___."
  • Leave the work open where you can see it.

When you come back

  1. Read your one line. Do not read everything else yet.
  2. Do the smallest piece of it. Two to five minutes.
  3. Check how your body is. Hungry, tired, wired? Fix the easy one first: water, food, a short walk, a slow breath out.
  4. Pick one of two: keep going for ten more minutes, or choose a different small task. Either counts as returning.

If the day already slipped

Pick a new starting time, write it down, and treat it as a fresh start. A late start is still a start.
