Referring a patient to PKJ Coaching
Nervous system coaching for adults with ADHD, alongside your care — never instead of it. This page exists so you know exactly where my work starts, where it stops, and what happens when something belongs back in your room.
What I do
I'm Pen King Jr., a Certified Health Coach in New York working with adults with ADHD on nervous system regulation, executive function, and burnout recovery. My training is Health Coach Institute's Advanced Health Coach program, an NBHWC-approved health and wellness coach training.
The gap I fill is implementation. A prescriber managing medication doesn't have time to build daily systems. A therapist doing depth work doesn't have a mandate for task initiation and calendars. Between those two is where most of my clients live — and where their week actually falls apart.
What I don't do
I don't diagnose. I don't treat. I don't provide medical or mental health advice, and I don't advise on medication of any kind.
If clinical material surfaces in a session — trauma, active depression, anything that belongs in your room rather than mine — the coaching pauses and I send them back to you. That is a stated part of my agreement with every client, not a judgment call I make case by case.
I am not a licensed therapist, physician, or medical provider. PKJ Coaching is not a licensed medical practice.
The decision, the dose, the schedule and the pace are entirely their prescriber's.
On medication, explicitly
I will never prescribe, recommend, or advise on medication. Some of my clients are reducing stimulant medication. When that happens, the decision, the dose, the schedule and the pace are entirely their prescriber's. I don't offer tapering as a service and I don't treat reduction as a goal or a measure of success.
What I work on is the nervous system regulation underneath — which is frequently what makes a reduction feel manageable or unmanageable. Patients often misread ordinary reregulation as the taper failing, and go back up when they didn't need to. Part of my job is giving them language for that. Part of it is noticing early when something looks wrong and sending them directly back to you.
Who I'm not the right fit for
I don't take clients who are in crisis, who have significant untreated depression, active substance use beyond a prescribed medication, an eating disorder, or psychiatric instability. I also don't take clients whose prescriber hasn't been part of the conversation.
- In crisis
- Significant untreated depression
- Active substance use beyond a prescribed medication
- An eating disorder
- Psychiatric instability
- A prescriber who hasn't been part of the conversation
If someone reaches me who needs something other than coaching, I'll say so and point them back.
How referral works
-
1
You mention me, or send your patient this page.
-
2
They book a free Nervous System Audit — a real working session, not a sales call. Some people leave with what they need and never work with me again.
-
3
If we go further, it's a 90-day programme with weekly sessions.
-
4
With the client's written permission, I'll send you a brief note after intake and flag anything you'd want to know. If you'd rather I didn't, I won't.
What your patient gets
Weekly one-to-one sessions, in person in New York or by video. A personalised daily practice, adjusted each week. Support between sessions.
Concretely: somatic regulation, executive function scaffolding, and burnout recovery for people who have already tried the productivity approaches and concluded — wrongly — that the failure was theirs.
